DPF system

Does your plant machinery need a DPF system?

All new diesel engines come equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and AdBlue system. Older models, made before 2014, might only have the DPF system as AdBlue became a vital part in the Euro 6 regulations aimed at fighting pollution. However, there are a few problems with these regulations that might make you doubt these new systems. So while new engines require DPF systems, do they need them?

How do DPF systems work?

A DPF system ensures harmful particulates released when we burn diesel don’t enter the atmosphere. The DPF system helps to reduce the harmful emission of these particulates by catching them in a filter before the waste product comes out of the exhaust. This is supposed to be beneficial to the environment and to human health by removing the soot and particulates that contribute to respiratory diseases, other health problems, smog, and air pollution, particularly in built-up areas.

While this may sound good in theory, many fleet owners and people with diesel engines are finding DPF systems cut a significant hole in their pockets.

The high cost of DPF systems

DPF systems are highly efficient; that is until they break down, which is more regularly than most would like. The reason they often need repairing so frequently is due to blockages which occur through no fault of the user. Rather, the way the fleet is used doesn’t allow for successful regeneration.

When the DPF collects soot, it need to regenerate in order to clear the soot from the filter, otherwise it will become clogged. This often means the engine needs to be used at a high intensity for an extended period of time, and not all engines and machinery operate this way leading to reduced regeneration and blockages. The results of this are expensive.

A new filter can cost over £1,000 – sometimes up to £3,500 depending on the engine. Even a blockage can mean shelling out £100 to clear it out. The fact that DPF systems are required by law, and removing them is an illegal offence, leads many to believe they have to put up with the high cost and disruptions a failing DPF can bring. But that’s not the case.

You don’t need a DPF

You can legally bypass the need for a DPF altogether by installing a kit that allows you to override the system. You can say goodbye to those hefty repair bills and rest assured your improved engine will be reliable for your business in one simple installation.

This is excellent news for those who rely on their machinery in remote areas. Those who can’t afford to go days waiting for repairs, losing money all the while as their business grinds to a halt. It’s the best way to ensure you can stay competitive, provide an excellent fleet, and uphold your business reputation.

If you want DPF breakdowns to be a thing of the past, getting your kit is easy. All you need to do is contact DPF Doctor and we will be more than happy to talk you through how our systems infuse reliability and cost-savings into your engine.
